UPM futsal striker helps team emerge champions

Thursday May 22, 2008

HOTSHOT striker Shafina Bazilah Shamsul was in top form to assist Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) to emerge as champions in the opening leg of the Malaysian Universities Sports Council (MASUM) Games women’s futsal competition at Universiti Malaya (UM) on Saturday.

The 23-year-old undergraduate in communication studies netted 12 goals at the five-day tournament.

She gave credit to her team-mates for their exceptional support and assistance on the court to allow her to make the opportunities count.

“We formed the team last year and we only took part in one competition prior to this. We played well here because we executed the set pieces and shooting drills that we practised in training,” she added.

We are the champs: The UPM women’s futsal side celebrating their victory.

In the final, UPM beat Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) 2-1.

They were rewarded with two goals through Shafina and Wan Rezawana Wan Daud in the first half of 15-minute play.

At the end of the match, UPM coach Norhafiszah Baba opted to substitute two key players - Nor Saliza A. Soobni and Shafina.

“We wanted to give both of them a breather because they played a very important role to control the pace in the match. In fact, Saliza was not at her best. She was carrying an injury and could not strike the ball hard,” Norhafiszah said.

And UTM took opportunity of the change and replied in the closing stage with Izwyn Zulkapri slotting their consolation goal.

In their preliminary matches, UPM topped the group with two convincing wins over UM and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK).

They thumped both sides with an identical 9-0 score to advance to the knockout stage.

“It was a good match against UM because I chalked up five goals in the opening match,” said Shafina, who was a former national volleyball player.

En route to the final, UPM defeated Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) 4-0 in the quarter-finals and edged Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) 3-1 in the semi-finals.

In addition, UPM goalkeeper Siti Zubaidah Che Hat also gave a respectable display standing in between the posts and conceded only two goals in five matches.

Meanwhile, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) forced the match down to the wire against UiTM in the third-fourth playoff.

Following a goalless draw in regulatory time, UiTM took the third spot with the solitary goal from Nazrah Alwi in the first half of five-minute extra time.

The inaugural women’s futsal introduced at the MASUM Games drew a good turnout with 15 teams in the fray.

Only Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) pulled out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, athletes from the public universities nationwide also competed in nine other sports - women’s hockey, softball, handball, lawn bowl, silat, rowing, cricket, kayaking and bowling for the season’s first MASUM Games.

The second and final MASUM Games is scheduled at Universiti Malaysia Sabah from May 21 to 28.

Warren Buffet - The Joys of a Simple Life

I strongly believe that each successful person is special. Special, not because that they are naturally gifted or lucky, but because of the strong will, the personality, the positivity, the thinking behind every brilliant mind. I'm always curious. How champions see the world? How could a person be so rich, yet remained so humble and down to earth?

Maybe that is why I love reading biographies of the most successful people in their respective field. What is in the mind of a champion?

The Joys of a Simple Life

There was a one hour interview on CNBC with Warren Buffet, the second richest man who has donated $31 billion to charity. In the following are some very interesting aspects of his life.

1. He bought his first share at age 11 and he now regrets that he started too late!

Things were very cheap that time.Encourage your child to invest.

2. He bought a small farm at age 14 with savings from delivering newspapers.

One could have bought many things with little savings.
Encourage your children to start some kind of business.

3. He still lives in the same small 3-bedroom house in mid-town Omaha that he bought after he got married 50 years ago. He says that he has everything he needs in that house. His house does not have a fence/wall.

Don't buy more than what you "really need" and encourage your children to do and think the same.

4. He drives his own car everywhere and does not have a driver or security people around him.

You are what you are.

5. He never travels by private jet although he owns the world's largest private jet company.

Always think of how you can accomplish things economically.

6. His company, Berkshire Hathaway owns 63 companies. He writes only one letter each year to the CEOs of this companies giving them goals for the year. He never holds meetings or calls them on a regular basis.

Assign the right people to do the right jobs.

7. He has given his CEOs only two rules:

1.Do not lose any of your shareholder' s money.
2.Do not forget Rule #1.
Set goals and make sure people focus on them.

8. He does not socialize with the high society crowd, His past time after he gets home is to make himself some popcorn and watch TV.

Don't try to show off. Just be yourself and do what you enjoy doing.

9. Warren Buffet does not carry a cellphone nor does he have a computer on his desk.

Bill Gates, the word's richest man met him for the first time only 5 years ago. Bill Gates did not think he had anything in common with Warren Buffet so he scheduled the meeting for only half an hour. But when Gates met him, the meeting lasted for ten hours and Bill Gates became a devotee of Warren Buffet.

His advice to young people:

Stay away from credit cards (bank loans) and invest in yourself.

Remember:
  • Money doesn't create man but it is the man who creates money.
  • Live your life as simply as you are.
  • Don't do what others say. Just listen to them but do what you feel is good.
  • Don't go for brand names. Just wear those things in which you feel comfortable.
Don't waste your money on unnecessary things. Spend it on who is really in need rather.
After all, it's your life. Why give other's the chance to rule our life.

The HAPPIEST people DO NOT necessarily have the BEST of all.
They simply APPRECIATE what they find on their way.

What started as an coincidental encounter turned out to be something more. A casual chat over the coffee table had turned into a sponsorship for a whole tournament.

After writing an email to Mr. Famous to tell him about a tournament that is being organized by a friend of mine, he was actually quite impressed with the email (that's what he said), and agreed to sponsor the whole tournament instead of one team. The whole process actually took only 1 day, and everything is set! He agreed to sponsor jerseys for all participating teams, and topped up the prize money too.

Initially the tournament was only organized for the men's team, banning all national players. However, Mr. Famous would like to have a girl's league as well. I told him that it wouldn't make a difference to me, as I'm usually labelled under 'national player' (even though the last time I played for Malaysia was... 5 years ago!). So, being Mr. Famous, he insisted to allow national players as well, just so that he could see us play ;)

In 1 week time, we have gone from being total strangers to having him sponsoring a tournament. People are usually stringent about sponsoring and giving money, but I guess this is a win win situation for him. He gets to promote his brand, and we get to play!

He's called 5 times today, or maybe more...
Maybe that is what bosses do-- Talking and building relationships & network. We'll see what happens.

We sneaked into a secluded room, where your mother agreed to a download from my hard drive. As soon as I was ready to upload, we discovered that neither one of us had used a firewall, and since it was too late to hit the delete button, nine months later a little Pop-Up appeared that said:
