A piece of mind

Came across this news from Reuters online. Seriously... what have gone wrong with the society and these people!

Given that the driver of the Audi A8 (for god's sake!) may have his right to sue for the damage of his "luxury car", but I think if he could afford an Audi A8, he could easily just absorb the cost himself! And to make the remark that he had made to the newspaper reporters, he is just a cold blooded jerk. The boy is dead! And he was speeding! Pity him, for having all the money in the world but could not understand sympathy.

"Daddy, did you really sue a dead boy's family for the damage of your car that hit the boy?" That is if he has children.

MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish driver who collided with a cyclist is suing the dead youth's family $29,300 for the damage the impact of his body did to his luxury car, a Spanish newspaper reported on Friday.

Businessman Tomas Delgado says 17-year-old Enaitz Iriondo caused $20,500 of damage to his Audi A8 in the fatal 2004 crash in La Rioja region, the El Pais newspaper reported.

Delgado, who has faced no criminal charges for the incident, wants a further 6,000 euros to cover the cost of hiring another vehicle while his car was being repaired, El Pais said.
The youth had been cycling alone at night without reflective clothing or a helmet, according to a police report cited by El Pais.

His family won 33,000 euros compensation from Delgado's insurance company after the firm acknowledged he had been driving at excessive speed and this could have contributed to the incident, El Pais reported.

"I'm also a victim in all of this, you can't fix the lad's problems, but you can fix mine," Delgado told the newspaper, ahead of a January 30 legal decision on his suit.

The family said they had previously pitied Delgado for the guilt he must feel at killing their son but were now disgusted that his greatest concern appeared to be money.

"This was the final straw, a kick in the teeth," the youth's mother Rosa Trinidad told El Pais.

2008 Resolutions

For the first time in my life, I actually took time to pin down my yearly resolutions. Previously I merely have the thoughts floating in my head. Most of the time they never made it to mid year. By the time year end came around, they were non-existent. Anyway, to me, writing the resolutions down means a great amount of commitment, so now I have no where to turn but to work on the goals. I dislike disappointing myself. So here I go...

  • Drink 1 bottle of water each day: Be it a 1.5 litre or a tiny 500 ml bottle. The point of this resolution is to form a habit of drinking plenty of water. I'm really bad at that because either I'm lazy to walk to the water dispenser, don't feel like carrying a heavy bottle around, or I just forget to drink! Ample of water also means healthier and prettier ;)

  • Stay active in volleyball in 2008: I have a few reasons to this. First, I still enjoy playing the sport a lot, although it's not as competitive as I'd like it to be. Second, getting a good workout once a week is the best de-stress outlet for me. Nothing release stress like hitting the soul out of a volleyball, and the amount of shouting and thrill involved in a match. Third, great way for me to stay fit and toned (not slim).

  • Have breakfast with Mom and Dad once a week: My parents have a habit of having breakfast together every morning. I want to make it a point to spend some quality time with them at least once a week. This may sound easy to some, but it is not always easy. Not when it's a Sunday morning, which is usually a 'sleep in' day for most of us, and I have to drag myself out of bed for an early breakfast with my parents. It do that from time to time previously, but now that I list it under my 2008 resolution, it's a promise to keep. It's worth it though.

  • Monthly financial contribution to the household: Since I live with my parents, it is only natural for me to contribute my trivial bit to the household, financially. Although it is not a huge amount, and it is not enough to payoff all the hefty bills, it is a token to show my appreciation.

  • 2 vacations: 1 being an oversea vacation, and 1 being a local trip to one of the islands. I have yet to visit the gorgeous islands and beaches in Malaysia (only been to Manukan, Langkawi and Pangkor, sadly). I'm thinking Redang or Perhentian island for the local trip. As for foreign spots, it really depends on perhaps... the bonus and increment for this year hehe. New Zealand sounds good. China isn't too bad either, it is the year of the Beijing Olympics. IF time and money allow, I'd like to visit my friends in the US and probably hop to Hawaii to visit Monica ;) That is a big IF though. Can't afford Europe yet, so that would go to the following years.

  • Be Kind & Be Nice: Be nice to T. Be a kind friend. Don't get me wrong. I'm usually kind and nice, except for some special circumstances. I once told a friend, I am only edgy under 3 circumstances. One, when I'm hungry, been like that since I was born :-p Two, when I'm extremely tired; I usually turn into an anti-social and refuse to talk. Three, when it is that time of the month (you know...); it's the hormones, can't help it, don't blame me ^-^. With that said, I will try to be kind & nice.

For those that I had missed on my sms list, Happy 2008! Work hard, for you shall be rewarded ;)
